In the News 2005 WSU Masonry Design Competition Project:
Fire Station and Rescue Unit The program for the project is to design an emergency services fire station, located at the boundary of the south hill and downtown Spokane adjacent to Interstate 90, separating and connecting the neighborhood of the south hill and the city. The fire station will serve the immediate area with paramedic and fire services and will have a special highway rescue unit to service Interstate 90. Besides the essential components of the firehouse, this station will feature a fire rescue training tower and a placement for a public art installation. Passing by the building on route 90, the building may signify the entrance to the city from the west and may affect ones perception of the station and the surrounding environment. The building should embrace ideas derived from a contemporary view of the firehouse with an approach to modern-day ideals for a healthy, efficient and hygienic environment. Built as integral parts of the neighborhood and the city, the fire station should be engaging to the social and cultural fabric. The notion of the firehouse as a pivotal element in an urban plan is central to the design problem. The
placement, formal composition and urban design strategy may place this
new building as a gateway to the city.
